PASTELS!
WITH MARIA LYLE
Saturday, May 15 (12-3PM)

Maria has been teaching art classes at Laguna Gloria Art School, Austin Community College and recently started teaching art classes at her own studio. She has displayed her pastels in galleries and restaurants for the past 20 years. Her travels and illustration background have helped her structure concepts and have given her a strong foundation to build on for her present artwork.

Come by Saturday and learn something new about pastels!

GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics!

We're happy and excited to announce that we now carry the full line of the brand new GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics in 2oz tubes!

From Golden's site:

"GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics are a slow-drying formulation with a slightly softer consistency than GOLDEN Heavy Body paints. The increased working time of these colors expands their range to include more traditional techniques once only possible with oils.

Because OPEN Acrylics dry slowly, painters who cover their palettes or use sealed containers have been able to use the same colors for weeks, reducing the amount of paint wasted and preserving color mixtures for future use."

Find out more info here, and come by the store to check them out!

IN-STORE DEMO (APRIL 10)

[Every Saturday here at Jerry's we bring in a special treat - A local Austin artist comes to the store and shares their knowledge and experience with you, providing lessons about whatever it is they specialize in. STRETCHING YOUR OWN CANVAS
WITH LINDA WANDT
Saturday, April 10 (12-3PM)

Have you ever wanted to paint on a canvas of your very own making? Well, if the answer is yes, your time has come. Linda Wandt will show you how to stretch a canvas to any size your heart desires. In this highly demanded demo Linda will show you how to properly assemble stretcher bars and stretch canvas over them to make a beautiful canvas. Come out and learn something new or just make sure you were doing it correct all this time.

Linda Wandt was born in Huntington, New York in 1981 and studied oil painting at the University of Texas at Austin, where she obtained a BA in studio art in 2006. She primarily paints figures in narration, or attempts to pose questions to her audience through visual means. Her paintings are usually bright, expressionist and often surreal. She has shown her work in various local businesses around Austin, and has participated in the East Austin Studio Tour in 2008-2009.

Announcing the 2010 Austin Middle School 8x10 Arts Show & Competition!

Last year's finalists!

The Austin area’s 6th, 7th and 8th grade art students
are cordially invited to participate in a show and competition of their work in the following categories:
  • painting
  • drawing
  • printmaking
  • sculpture
  • mixed media
The work will be judged by area gallery directors, professional artists, and museum curators.

Prizes will be awarded at a reception and awards ceremony – a pizza party for students, friends and families. The reception and awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 9th, from 3-5 pm at Jerry’s, and the artwork will be on display until May 22nd.

ALL work must be done in the 8” x 10” (including mats) format (i.e.: 8x10 canvases, Bristol board, sculpture, etc) and be able to be displayed standing on ledge molding or from a nail. Jerry’s has 8x10 canvases available for participants. No frames or glass, please.

The idea for the show’s format was borrowed from The Arthouse at the Jones Center 5x7 Show, held in Austin, every year in May, for Texas professional artists. Unlike the charity Arthouse event, the work of our students can be for sale and all proceeds will go to the young artist (the work DOES NOT have to be for sale). We hope this will be the continuation of an Austin Art tradition (this is the 3rd year for this event), and there will be media coverage!

This is a fantastic opportunity to expose your students to the art of their peers, competition with prizes, and having their work appear in a public venue.

Teachers can enter more than one piece of work for a student, but no more than 50 entries from any one school.

There is no fee for this competition, and the deadline for submission is 6 p.m., Friday, April 30th, at Jerry’s.

Teachers are asked to help place their student’s work that day and PLEASE have it labeled on the back with:
Student’s Name, Grade, and Age
Medium, Title, and Sale Price or NFS (not for sale)
Name of School
Teacher’s Name, Contact Phone Number, and e-mail
Teachers must pick up their students’ work by May 26 th.

We hope you will take advantage of this amazing opportunity to recognize Austin’s young artists and your school’s art program. Contact us now to register your school! Please let us know ASAP if you will be a part of this great event (please send email to both addresses)!

Thank you,

Your Co-ordinators,
Catherine Hart (cwhart@jerrysartarama.com)
Nancy Hoover (ndhartist@aol.com)
